The real problem

A “destructive” dog is almost always a bored dog.

Banjo was on his fourth home in fourteen months — a sixty-pound Australian Shepherd who'd chewed through three couches and was being evaluated for whether he was even placeable. When his foster was asked what he did all day, she thought for a long moment and said: “Mostly that.”

Here was a brain built to herd livestock across a mountainside in eight directions at once, being asked to spend twelve hours a day doing nothing. The destruction wasn't a defect — it was a brain looking for a job.

The fix was a short list of household items costing about seven dollars, and twenty minutes a day. Fifteen days later, Banjo had stopped destroying things, was sleeping through the night, and was — for the first time — calm. He wasn't trained. He was engaged. That difference is what this book is about.

He was called destructive when what he really was, was bored.

The promise

Twenty minutes a day. That's the whole system.

Mental work tires a dog faster than a five-mile walk — and it's the thing almost nobody tries first. No new gear, no hour-long sessions, no harsh corrections. Just a calmer dog by the end of the week.

What's inside

101 games, across five kinds of thinking.

Every game is sorted by difficulty, so you always know where to start — and how to make it harder as your dog's confidence grows.

1–20 · Group A

Food & Foraging

Turn every meal into a puzzle. Snuffle work, scatter feeding, and DIY games that slow fast eaters and burn real mental energy.

21–40 · Group B

Nose Work & Scent

Tap into your dog's strongest sense. Find-it games and scent trails that calm anxious dogs and tire them out fast.

41–60 · Group C

Problem-Solving Puzzles

Real cognitive challenge — sequencing and “figure-it-out” games that build focus, patience, and resilience.

61–80 · Group D

Trick Training for the Brain

Tricks aren't party pieces — they're structured thinking that builds attention, impulse control, and vocabulary.

81–101 · Group E

Social & Environmental

Confidence-building enrichment that helps reactive and nervous dogs feel safe in the world around them.

· Bonus

Troubleshooting & Adapting

What to do when your dog gives up too fast, gets over-excited, or isn't food-motivated — plus plans by age and breed.

· The complete plan

The 30-Day Brain-Training Program

Not just a pile of games — a guided four-week plan that grows from a single daily habit into a routine you'll both keep.
